Access Barriers
Many communities in Kenya and East Africa face barriers to reproductive healthcare including distance to facilities, cost, stigma, and limited availability of trained providers. Rural areas are particularly affected, and young people often face additional challenges accessing services without judgement.
Youth SRHR Challenges
East and Southern Africa has a significant burden among adolescent girls and young women for HIV and related SRHR vulnerabilities. Kenya experiences notable adolescent pregnancy rates. Comprehensive, youth-friendly health information and services are essential for improving outcomes.
HIV & STI Prevention
Kenya has made significant progress in HIV prevention and treatment. Tools like PrEP, condoms, voluntary male circumcision, and treatment as prevention are increasingly available. However, new infections continue, particularly among young women and key populations. Regular testing remains critical.
Gender-Based Violence
Intimate partner violence remains a significant challenge in Kenya. The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey documents that a notable proportion of women experience physical or sexual violence. Support services exist but awareness and access need strengthening.
Adolescent Pregnancy
Kenya faces meaningful levels of adolescent pregnancy, driven by factors including limited access to contraception, economic vulnerability, and gender inequality. Addressing this requires both educational and structural interventions.
Family Planning Progress
Kenya shows meaningful family planning use, with increasing uptake of modern contraceptive methods. However, significant unmet need persists, particularly in certain regions and demographics. Continued investment in access and education is essential.
Kenya's Constitutional Provision on Reproductive Health
Under Article 26 of the Constitution of Kenya, abortion is generally not permitted unless, in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or as permitted by any other written law.
